Online technologies like social media and messaging platforms are part of everyday life. While technology provides communication channels for us to share our thoughts, some actors with bad intentions can take advantage of it to turn online platforms against us. Thus, we are permanently under the threat of cyberbullying.
Most of the online services used by the citizens of the European Union are run by foreign companies outside the EU. This phenomenon adversely affects the ability of the EU to bring actions against cyberbullying.
Most victims of cyberbullying are teenagers. At this age, online harassment can lead to serious psychological damage, even to suicide. Thus, we must take immediate actions and provide a long-term solution.
The early detection of online harassment can be the key approach to effectively protect citizens. Recognising the scientifical complexity of this issue, a wider cooperation is needed.
European Union – as a coordinator – should invite the most important technology companies to cooperate on a research project about the effective detection of cyberbullying. This association-concept aims to create synergy among companies and EU member states. By sharing extensive knowledge about official EU languages and cybercrime cases from Europol, a successful partnership can be found.
Our duty is to protect the younger generation physically and mentally. If this mission is well conducted, they will have a safer environment to grow up.
